Recovery Update

This will be just a quick update to let you know how Violet is doing. I'll try to post some pictures later today.

2 days ago, we were concerned something was going wrong with Violet's palate. It's hard to describe, but it really looked like there were some pretty big gaps around the edges of the palate where they made the incisions. That combined with more food and drink coming out of her nose than before the surgery had us really worried.

24 hours later, it appears that was just lighting and swelling. We got a really good look at her mouth during a diaper change, and it's looking more and more (to our laymen eyes) like everything is healing as it should. Why she's having trouble with stuff coming out her nose, we're not sure, but the palate itself looks good. We're still another 10-12 days from her post-op check so we'll know more at that time.

Violet's tolerance of both the arm restraints and the modified diet has been amazing. She has had her moments, but for a 2 year old, her behavior under the circumstances has been remarkable. On top of everything else, she's even decided she wants to learn to use the bathroom. The biggest problem we've had is that she went through a period of 4-5 days where she would have nothing to do with Mommy which was hard on everyone. Now that she's past that, things are much easier for all of us.

Comments:

You might want to post on the message board at cleftadvocate.com. We didn't really have much of a problem with stuff coming out the nose, but I think I have seen other moms post about that, and it is fairly common. I know it is easy to panic -- I did a couple of times when I thought I saw a hole. Getting others experience about the stuff coming out of the nose after surgery might ease your mind a little.
